Studies on Experimental Colitis Employing Anti-Rabbit-Colon Duck Serum

Abstract
The author studied on the subject in normal rabbits, which were divided into three groups.
Normal rabbits in Group I were sensitized. with normal duck serum (NDS)(I-A) and anti-rabbit-colon duck serum (II-R-C DS)(I-B),over 160x in titers and received challenging injection with the same A-RC DS two weeks later.
The same thing was performed in group II with NDS(II-A) and Anti-Rabbit-Colon , mucosa Duck Serum (A-R-E DS) (]1 -B), and in Group Ill (Control group) with (NDS) (1)1-A), egg white (III-B), emulsion of colon( IQ-C) and emulsion.f of colon mucosa(III-D).
Subsequently changes of serum protein and blood pictures besides the pathological changes of the colon, ileum, appendix and other organs after challenging injections were compared with those of control group (Group l) Relative observations were made for the first four days after the challenging injections and the following conclusions were obtained.
1. Though morphological changes of the colon were slight in general, edematous swelling, congestion, round cell infiltration, proliferation of intestinal glands, necrosis of surface epithelia, denudation and ulceration in mucosa and submucosa were observed in all cases from the second day after the challenging injections.
The changes in Group I -B and 11-B were stronger than Group I -A and 11-A in which the changes occurred later. In Group M, the morphological changes were limited to slight edema, congestion, and cell infiltration.
2. The changes of ileum were stronger than those of colon and variety of changes of ileum were similar in colon.
It revealed from the second day after challenging injection to the fourth day after this and. Group II arid.
Group I were similar in their appearance of this changes. In Group III changes occurred but slight.
3. Edema, congestion, round cell infiltration, proliferation of intestinal glands and lymph follicles, necrosis
and ulceration in mucosa of appendix occurred on the second. day after the challenging injections.
The degree of changes was strongest in Group H -B than other groups, decreasing in changes in order of
the Group 11-A, f -B, and 1-A. I.i Group three, the changes were limited in Group B-A and slight.
4. in various organs such as heart, lung, kidney, liver, spleen and adrenal glands, vascular changes were similar in all groups.
The changes were mainly congestion, hemostasis, endothelial swelling, thickening of arteriolar wall and round cell infiltraion around blood vessels. Occasionally, perivascular proteinoid exudation, thrombus formation and fibrinoid degeneration were seen.
Such vascular changes seem to be a nonspecific allergic reaction due to foreign protein rather than a specific one occurring after anti-rabbit duck serum injection.
5. Changes of serum albumin were not remarkable but there was a tendency to increase total protein and gamma globulin, decreasing of albumin and A/G ratio. The changes especially were stronger in Group I< -B than other groups, decreasing in changes in order of Group I-A, II -A and Group I(. In Group 1II , the changes were limited to Ill-A.
6. Increase in leucocyte count, changes in differential count, increasing lymph cells were seen in all cases and it was most remarkable in Group ll -A.
